Bill Overview

Analyzed Economic Effects

3 provisions identified: 0 benefits, 1 costs, 2 mixed.

Chester lodging businesses must collect hotel tax

Lodging owners must collect and pay the village hotel tax. They are liable and can recover it from guests like rent. The village fiscal officer runs collection unless a local law says otherwise. The village sets how often returns and payments are due. Extra tax is usually limited to three years after a return is filed. There is no limit for fraud or if no return was filed. To challenge a final bill, first deposit the amount. Or file a judge‑approved guarantee. If tax was charged wrongly, apply for a refund. If denied, you have 30 days to ask a court to review.

Chester adds up to 5% hotel tax

The village of Chester can charge a hotel tax. It can be up to 5% of the nightly room rate. It applies to hotels, motels, and bed‑and‑breakfasts in the village. If you stay 90 straight days or more, you do not pay this tax for that period. The village chooses the exact rate, up to 5%.

Hotel tax money goes to village services

All hotel tax money goes to the village general fund. The village can use it for any lawful purpose. This can help pay for local services. It does not change your tax rate.
