Extra exam points for sanitation workers’ families

Effective immediately, the law gives eligible children and siblings of New York City sanitation members 10 extra civil service exam points. The member must have been killed in the line of duty. This includes deaths directly caused by the September 11, 2001 World Trade Center attack or related rescue work. The competitive exam must be for an initial appointment in the same municipality where the member served. Candidates must pass the exam and provide proof of eligibility by the time the hiring list is set. The points are added to the final earned score when that list is set; they do not guarantee a job. Generally, candidates cannot use the points again after receiving a permanent initial appointment helped by the points. Appointments do not count against future use when the points did not change list placement or relative standing at appointment. Appointments ended during or at the end of probation also do not count. Candidates can withdraw their request before the list is set. Afterward, but before permanent appointment, they can give up the points in writing and accept a lower ranking. That choice cannot be reversed. Civil service agencies must keep a roster of appointments made using these points. A second appointment using the points is void.
