Help for Thornwood firefighters and families

The law lets the Thornwood firefighters’ benevolent association give relief to members and their families who are disabled, poor, or hurt in the line of duty. It can support health and safety, morale, social and recreational events, and maintain a headquarters. These services are for association members and their families within the Thornwood protection area.

Fire insurance tax money to Thornwood

Starting January 1, 2026, the association collects the state tax on fire‑insurance premiums for property in the Thornwood protection area. It also gets a share of a related tax based on business written there. An officer named in the by‑laws has the same powers as a fire department treasurer to receive these taxes. The money can be used only for the association’s purposes in this law.

Membership rules for Thornwood firefighters' group

The law creates the Volunteer and Exempt Firefighters' Benevolent Association of Thornwood, New York. Members are active Thornwood firefighters and exempt volunteer firefighters who earned that status through service in Thornwood. To join, you must tell the secretary in writing before the organization meeting, attend that meeting (or an adjournment), or send written notice within 60 days after election. An active member who leaves without exempt status is dropped from membership.
