The law lets an intended parent get paid back for some costs when IVF or IUI fails. This applies only if you bought a credit insurance policy that covers failed IVF or IUI. It can repay living costs for a surrogate during treatment, travel, and medical or hospital bills not paid by your main health plan, including copays, deductibles, and coinsurance. The credit policy cannot be your only way to pay medical bills; it is not a substitute for comprehensive health insurance.
When you buy this credit insurance, the application and policy must state that it is not a substitute for comprehensive health insurance. If you buy it through an excess line broker, the broker must give the same notice. The law also defines “gestational parent,” “birth parent,” and “adoptive parent” so insurers and families know who is covered.
