Coroners and coroner’s deputies must register with the Department of Health every three years to practice. You cannot practice if you have not met the education rules, except during your first year in office. You can practice again only after you finish the training and have a completion certificate from the Department of Health or another listed agency. The New York State Association of County Coroners and Medical Examiners keeps compliance records and notifies you and your county if you are not in compliance. These rules apply starting 180 days after enactment.
Coroners and coroner’s deputies must complete state-approved medical-legal training. You must earn at least 30 credits every three years. The Department of Health sets and approves the courses with other state agencies. You pay the course costs, but your county may reimburse some or all. New officeholders get a one-year exemption, and the Department of Health can grant adjustments for certified health issues, extended active duty, or other good cause.
