In New York, cars with connected services must show in-car notices when those services are on. The notice must explain how to turn them off or change settings. This applies unless the provider shows it is not technically possible. For cars built before January 1, 2028 that can get software updates, this starts July 1, 2026. For cars built on or after January 1, 2028, it starts January 1, 2028.
In New York, domestic violence victims can stop someone’s remote access to their car. A covered provider (the automaker or its agent) must end access within two business days after a valid request. Your request must include the VIN, proof you legally have the car (title, title plus lease, court order, proof of marriage, or other proof set by DMV with OPDV), and a written statement that you are a victim under state law. The company cannot ask for more than those items and cannot charge a fee. If it cannot end access for technical reasons, it must tell you quickly and give steps to disable or change settings yourself. Your information stays confidential and is deleted within 90 days after your request is processed. The company may contact you or your chosen representative to confirm access was ended. Providers must post clear how‑to instructions on their websites and in-vehicle apps, and the state’s Office for the Prevention of Domestic Violence will publish guides. Companies face a civil penalty up to $500 per violation for not following the law, while actions needed to comply get limited legal protection.
