Gregory Prokop gets a 20-year retirement option

The law takes effect immediately and lets Monroe County offer deputy sheriff Gregory M. Prokop a 20-year retirement plan. The county must have chosen to offer this plan to its deputy sheriffs. Within 180 days after enactment, it must file a governing-body resolution and certification with the State Comptroller. The certification must confirm that Prokop's own negligence did not prevent his earlier enrollment. Prokop must file his choice with the retirement system within one year after the law takes effect. If he chooses the plan, the system must credit his service from October 8, 1991, to the present.

Monroe County pays added retirement plan costs

Monroe County must pay all employer costs for past service associated with this law. It can spread those costs over five years. The fiscal note estimates a past-service cost of about $141,000, or about $31,600 yearly when spread over five years. It also estimates about $13,000 in added annual county contributions for the fiscal year ending March 31, 2026. These are estimates, not fixed payment amounts set by the law.
