This law lets Carl J. Zimmerman, a Monroe County sergeant since October 29, 1990, join the 20-year pension plan now. Monroe County must file a resolution and a certification with the State Comptroller within 180 days saying the missed sign-up was not his negligence. After that filing, Mr. Zimmerman must elect coverage within one year of this law’s effective date. The retirement system then credits his service from October 29, 1990 to the present under the 20-year plan.
Monroe County must pay all employer past service costs tied to this change. The county can spread these payments over five years.
