Who can join Hampton Bays fire association

The law sets who can be a member of the Hampton Bays Volunteer Exempt Firemen's Benevolent Association. You can join if you are now, were, or later become a volunteer member of the Hampton Bays fire department or a fire company in the district. Residents who are exempt volunteer firefighters in the district or in areas the department protects by contract can also join. Anyone expelled or removed for cause from a fire company or department cannot be a member. If you are not an exempt firefighter and you move out of the protected area, your membership ends.

Fire insurance tax now funds Hampton Bays

Beginning January 1, 2026, the Hampton Bays fire association is paid the state tax on fire insurance premiums for property in its protection area in Southampton, Suffolk County. An officer named in the association's by-laws collects the payments. The money goes to the association and can be used for any purpose that furthers its purposes, not just aid to disabled or poor firefighters and their families. The law takes effect now, but these tax rules apply only to premiums received on or after January 1, 2026.
