The law lets Karol Hughes, a part-time East Rochester police officer who has served continuously, take the competitive civil service exam for police officer. It overrides Civil Service Law section 58, including age limits, and any other rule that would block her. If she earns a qualifying score, she can be placed on the eligible list for a full-time job with the East Rochester police department. She still must meet the same merit and fitness standards as other full-time officers. The law takes effect immediately.
