Some peer support talks can be shared to protect safety or meet the law. Sharing is allowed for a specific threat of suicide or self-harm, a threat of bodily harm or death, or child abuse or neglect. Sharing is required when the law requires a report, the talk admits a crime, or a court orders it. These are set exceptions to the confidentiality rule.
Peer support talks between police officers and trained peers are confidential. Specialists and participants may not share what was said or written with anyone else. Before your first session, you get a written notice explaining confidentiality and its exceptions. You can choose to let them share your own messages at any time.
A state division sets rules for law enforcement peer support. The rules cover training, certification, recordkeeping, and retraining. The law takes effect on the 90th day after it became law. Agencies can issue needed rules right away so they are ready by that date.
