Parkland removal requires replacements and new path

The city must set aside at least the fair market value of any parkland it removes. That money must buy new parkland or pay for park improvements in Queens. At least 20 acres of new parkland must be built on or next to the site, plus a north–south path from the passerelle pedestrian bridge to Boat Basin Place. The developer must build and maintain that path. If federal money helped buy or fix the land, the city must meet federal rules first, including equal value and usefulness for any replacement land. If casino construction does not start within 15 years of this law’s effective date, or if the land is used for something else, it returns to NYC Parks for park use.

Casino and development allowed at Flushing Meadows

The law lets New York City stop using specific land in Flushing Meadows Corona Park as parkland. The city can lease it to Queens Future, LLC or its affiliates for a gaming facility and related hotels, stores, events, recreation, parking, and roads. Area A is about 76.9646 acres (excluding Citi Field). Area B is about 0.361 acres. This changes park access for people near the site.
