New Hauppauge volunteer firefighters association

The law creates the Hauppauge Volunteer Exempt Firefighter's Benevolent Association. Members can be current, former, or future Hauppauge fire district volunteers or members of any fire company in the district. Residents who are exempt volunteer firefighters under state law can also join. Anyone expelled for cause from a fire company cannot join. If a non-exempt volunteer moves away or the area loses district protection, their membership ends. Applicants must give written notice to the fire department secretary before the organization meeting or attend it.

Hauppauge firefighters get insurance tax funds

Starting January 1, 2026, the Hauppauge firefighters’ benevolent association collects foreign fire insurance taxes. The taxes come from premiums on property insured inside the Hauppauge protection area in parts of Smithtown and Islip, and any area Hauppauge protects by contract. The group also gets its share of related taxes based on business written there. An officer named in its bylaws receives the money and has a fire department treasurer’s powers. The taxes can be spent only on the association’s stated purposes.
