Mount Vernon deed tax up to 1.5%

The law lets Mount Vernon charge a deed tax on property in the city, up to 1.5% of the sale price, even if the closing happens elsewhere. The city may allow you to subtract liens and up to $100,000 before the tax is figured, which can save up to $1,500 at the 1.5% cap. Deals with contracts signed before September 1, 1984 are exempt. The city can also require you to pay the tax and file a return before the deed is recorded. This takes effect immediately.
