2 provisions identified: 1 benefits, 0 costs, 1 mixed.

Heat safety rules for school classrooms

The law requires all New York school districts and BOCES to keep a heat-safety policy. An extreme heat day is when an occupiable classroom or support space is 82°F or higher. Measure room temperature in the shade, three feet above the floor, near the center. At 82°F, schools must ease heat stress by steps like dimming lights, using shades and fans, opening doors and windows, turning off unused electronics, and giving water breaks. At 88°F, the policy must plan to move students and staff out of the room when practicable. Kitchen areas used to prepare food are excluded.

Schools update emergency response plans

New York school districts and BOCES must keep written plans for emergencies like evacuation, sheltering, and lock-down. Plans must list evacuation routes and shelter sites. They must include steps for medical needs, transportation, and how to notify parents and guardians. The law removes the explicit mention of extreme heat from this list.
