The law requires licensed landscape architects to complete continuing education to register and practice. You must finish at least 36 hours every three years, with at least 24 hours on health, safety, and welfare. Courses can be in landscape architecture or related fields that help your practice and meet state rules. Taking a course in another licensed field does not let you practice that field. You can carry over up to 6 hours to the next three-year period. Keep records and give them to the Department if asked. Exemptions: your first three-year period after initial licensure; documented health reasons; extended active U.S. military duty; or other good cause the Department accepts. If you are not practicing and file an inactive status, you are exempt. To return, you must tell the Department first and meet the required education. If your first registration date after this section’s effective date was less than three years away and on or after January 1, 2007, your hours are prorated at one per month for that time. If you have not met the requirements, you may only practice with a conditional registration the Department issues.
You pay a $45 continuing education fee at the start of each three-year registration, on top of the regular renewal fee. If you need a conditional registration to make up missing hours, you also pay an extra fee equal to the regular three-year registration fee. A conditional registration lasts no more than one year, and you must complete the missing education within that time.
The law takes effect eighteen months after it becomes law. The Department can adopt, change, or repeal rules now so they are ready by the start date.
