Broader support for Cheektowaga volunteer firefighters

Beginning November 3, 2025, the Rescue Volunteer and Exempt Firemen's Benevolent Association Inc. has broader purposes. It can maintain headquarters for member gatherings and help volunteer members and their families facing disability, financial need, or duty-related injuries. Its purposes also cover family welfare, members' health and safety, and social and recreational activities that build morale. It can promote volunteer firefighting in the area protected by Rescue Volunteer Hose Company No. 1 in Cheektowaga, Erie County. The funding changes apply to taxes due on insurance premiums received on or after January 1, 2026. The association collects fire insurance premium taxes under section 9104 for property in Walden Fire District No. 2 or areas the district must protect. It must use those receipts for its stated purposes and receives a section 9105 tax share based on insurance business in that territory. Officers chosen through its bylaws collect the taxes with the same legal powers and duties as fire department treasurers. The law sets no payment amount and guarantees no individual benefit.
