Suffolk tax revenue supports public safety

Through November 30, 2027, Suffolk County must dedicate 12.5% to 37.5% of the extra 1% tax’s net collections to public safety. The rest goes into the county’s general fund. This allocation applies when the county legislature approves the tax by a simple majority and the county executive signs it. The allocation rule takes priority over conflicting laws.

Suffolk’s extra sales tax authority extended

The law takes effect immediately and extends Suffolk County’s extra sales and use tax authority through November 30, 2027. The previous end date was November 30, 2025; the authorized period began June 1, 2001. The extra 1% applies to taxable purchases on top of the otherwise authorized 3% county rate. Imposing it requires a local law, ordinance, or resolution approved by a simple majority of the county legislature. The county executive must also sign it.
