Schools must keep automated external defibrillators (AEDs) in each instructional building. The state education and health commissioners set how many and which types. AEDs must be clearly marked, easy to reach, and maintained to American Heart Association or other national standards. This improves rapid response to sudden cardiac arrest for students, staff, and visitors.
Each district safety team writes and carries out a cardiac emergency response plan. It covers school sites and school events, including sports, with venue-specific steps. Plans follow evidence-based elements, like American Heart Association guidance, and schools must consider how plans align with local EMS. Districts train all staff each year on the emergency response plan, including violence prevention, mental health, and sudden cardiac arrest. New hires get this training within 30 days or during onboarding. Emergency policies now list sudden cardiac arrest along with evacuation, sheltering, and lockdown. Policies include routes, shelter sites, steps for medical needs and transport, and how parents and guardians get urgent notices.
