The law lets six named Onondaga County deputy sheriffs join the optional 20-year retirement plan. The County must pass a resolution and file a certification with the State Comptroller within 180 days. Each named deputy must file an election with the State within one year of the law’s effective date. They must have missed the original signup through no fault of their own. Once elected, they get full rights and benefits under the 20-year plan.
Onondaga County must pay all past service costs to put this law in place. A state fiscal note estimates about $382,000 one-time and about $39,000 more for the year ending March 31, 2026. Future yearly costs can vary and average about 5.9% of salary, per the note.
