New York oyster oversight continues through 2027

The law extends New York’s Department of Environmental Conservation authority to regulate oysters through December 31, 2027, effective immediately. Rules can cover size, catch and possession limits, seasons, closed areas, and methods of harvesting and landing oysters. They can also cover permit requirements and eligibility, records, identification, fishing effort, and gear amounts and types. Transportation, possession, and sales can also be regulated. These rules cannot be less strict than the Environmental Conservation Law’s requirements. The law itself sets no new harvest limits or fees.
