Effective now, through December 31, 2028, New York’s environmental agency manages weakfish. The agency can set size limits, catch and possession limits, seasons and closed areas, gear rules, permits, and recordkeeping. It can also set rules for taking, landing, transporting, and selling weakfish. These rules must be at least as strict as current state law and must be consistent with Atlantic States Marine Fisheries Commission and federal fishery plans. Commercial and recreational fishers may face tighter limits or new permits and records, or see seasons and areas opened or adjusted.
