Ithaca can swap parkland for farming

Effective immediately, the law lets the Town of Ithaca remove park status from 8.33 acres and transfer it for farming. Before removing park status, the town must dedicate the specified replacement land as parkland: 8.33 acres excluding road rights-of-way. The town must never have used that replacement land for public open space or park purposes. If the replacement is worth less, the town must put the value difference toward more parkland or major park improvements. If federal money helped buy, maintain, or improve the original parkland, the town must meet federal requirements before the transfer. This includes showing the U.S. Secretary of the Interior that substitute land has equal market value and usefulness.
