Mandatory training and education for coroners

Every coroner and deputy must take and pass an initial state‑approved medical‑legal investigation course. They must also complete at least 30 credit hours of approved continuing education every three years. You pay the course costs unless your county chooses to reimburse you. For one year after you finish the initial course, you are exempt from the continuing education requirement. You must register every three years on a county form, file an attestation with the county clerk, and keep proof for seven years; give documents to the Department of Health if asked. If you are not in compliance, you cannot practice until you meet the requirements. Counties may grant a temporary waiver for extended active military duty or for other good cause for up to one year. The Department of Health approves and sets rules for these courses, in consultation with other state agencies, and may require extra training for newly elected or appointed coroners or deputies.

When coroner training rules take effect

Most of the law takes effect right away. Section one starts on the same date as a 2025 county‑law chapter on coroner education. This act sets that chapter’s effective date to one year after it became law.
