Veterans can share tuition help with family

Qualified veterans can transfer unused tuition awards once to one family member, without exceeding their remaining award. The recipient must be the veteran’s spouse, child, or financial dependent and live in New York. A child receiving the award must be under 26. The law removes the prior 10-year service requirement and its exceptions. Survivors are no longer listed separately; they must qualify as a spouse, child, or financial dependent.

Veterans’ tuition transfers capped at 100 yearly

The law limits veterans’ tuition award transfers to 100 per year. Veterans must name the recipient and number of semesters on the program’s form and attach it to their application. The program must make the form and related information available. The program president must set an application deadline and selection rules for years when requests exceed 100.
