New native plant label for nurseries

The Agriculture and Markets Department, with Environmental Conservation, sets standards for a New York native plant label. The state posts a list that separates non-invasive plants native to New York from species expected to move in with climate change. Only registered nursery growers and dealers can use official seals or logos to market qualifying New York-grown plants. “Native plants” includes non-invasive species, seeds and plant parts used for propagation, and some plants shifting into New York. The Department also provides education to producers, garden centers, schools, consumers, Cornell Cooperative Extension, and farm groups. These steps begin when the 2025 native plants law takes effect—one year after it becomes law.

Start date delayed for native plant label

The 2025 native plant designation starts one year after it becomes law, not right away. This law also times the repeal of the old rule and the new program to that same start date. The rest of this act takes effect now.
