State guide for steps after a death

The New York State Office for the Aging must post a "Guide to Actions When Someone Close Dies" on its website within one year of this section’s effective date. The office may also provide a paper version in that same year. The guide covers money topics like pensions, Social Security, life and health insurance, and death benefits, and points to the Tax and Finance Department for estate tax help. It explains how to get death certificates and what to know about wills and trusts. It gives grief and mental health support information. It explains funeral and burial steps and points to the Health Department’s Bureau of Funeral Directing. The office may consult experts like funeral directors, grief counselors, attorneys, tax pros, and clergy; no formal advisory committee is required.
