Faster death report sharing for health officials

The State Health Commissioner, or a designee, can ask in writing for all death reports, including autopsy and toxicology, for official use. Coroners and medical examiners must send completed reports within three business days. Local health officers can also request records when a death happens in their district. They can request records for deaths outside the district if the person lived in the district and had one of these ties: an injury or toxic exposure that caused or helped cause the death; received significant care for the illness that led to death; or was pronounced dead or the body was found in the district. For in-district deaths, reports are due within three business days after completion. For out-of-district cases, reports are due the earlier of seven days after completion or seven days after the written request.

Logs and notice for cross-district requests

Coroners and medical examiners must keep copies of any records they send as part of the official case file. When a local health officer asks for records from another district, they must keep a log. Within three business days of the request, they must send a copy of the written request to the local health officer in the district that holds the records.
