Full property tax break for 100 percent disabled veterans

Local governments and school districts can now give a full property tax exemption on a qualifying veteran’s main home. The exemption covers all real property taxes and covered special district charges, assessments, and special ad valorem levies. The veteran must have an eligible discharge (honorable; or a qualifying condition or discharged LGBT veteran with no bad conduct or dishonorable discharge). The veteran must be permanently and totally disabled from military service, and also have either a 100 percent VA rating, a VA individual unemployability rating, or be eligible for or have used federal monetary help to buy or adapt the home for the disability. Your county, city, town, village, or school district must first adopt this exemption by local law or resolution. The law is in effect now and applies to assessment rolls prepared on and after January 2, 2026.
