2 provisions identified: 0 benefits, 1 costs, 1 mixed.

Property tax break for active-duty homeowners

Your county, city, town, or village can adopt this property tax exemption. You must be on active duty, have served in a combat zone that year, and show orders or a commander's letter. Your duty station must place your home in New York; only the residential portion is covered and school taxes are not. The local law can exempt up to 25% of assessed value, capped at the lower of $20,000 or $20,000 times the latest state equalization rate (or class ratio). You cannot also claim a 458, 458-a, or 458-b exemption in the same year.

Yearly filing rules for military tax break

To get the exemption, you must file the state form with your assessor by the taxable status date and refile each year. In a city with 1 million or more people, the deadline is March 15. Knowingly false statements can bring criminal penalties. A local government can repeal the exemption only if it acts at least 90 days before the taxable status date.
