If your voter registration is marked "permanently disabled" and you have applied for an absentee ballot before, you get future absentee ballots automatically. The clerk mails ballots to your last known address and asks the post office not to forward them. Undeliverable ballots are returned to the clerk within five days. The board or clerk chooses first‑class or certified mail and uses the same method for all such ballots.
You can vote absentee in a school district election if you will be out of your county on election day. You can vote absentee if illness, a physical disability, or primary caregiving keeps you from appearing. You can vote absentee if you live in or are a patient at a VA hospital. You can vote absentee if you are detained awaiting grand jury or trial, or confined after a non‑felony conviction, and still qualified to vote in your home district.
Your absentee application must list your full name, date of birth, and home address. If your mailing address is different, list it and where to send the ballot. You must state your reason, such as illness, disability, caregiving, being out of the county, a hospital stay, or detention. If you need ballots for more than one election, give the start and end dates of your absence. Deadlines: the clerk must get your application seven days before the election if the ballot is mailed, or by the day before if delivered in person. You must sign that the information is true. A material false statement is a misdemeanor.
