Bill Overview

Analyzed Economic Effects

2 provisions identified: 2 benefits, 0 costs, 0 mixed.

Emergency take-home doses to start treatment

Practitioners in hospitals and other institutions can give emergency take-home controlled meds to start detox or maintenance. In hospitals without a full-time pharmacy, ER patients can get up to a 24-hour supply. A longer supply is allowed only if the DEA authorizes it to start treatment. All dispensing follows state health department rules.

More medication options for addiction care

Providers can use any FDA-approved Schedule III–V narcotic for maintenance or detox treatment. Methadone or a commissioner-named drug can be given while you wait for a program referral. A practitioner or a supervised agent may give these drugs as part of a withdrawal plan. Approved treatment programs can give or dispense these drugs directly, under federal rules.
