Brookhaven can use parkland for flood control

The law lets the Town of Brookhaven stop using two small park parcels near Bellport as parks to build a stormwater runoff and recharge basin. Parcel I is about 0.44 acres and Parcel II is about 0.58 acres. The town board sets the terms. Before any change of use or transfer, the town must dedicate at least the fair market value of the land to buy new parkland or improve existing parks. If federal money supported these parks, the town must meet federal rules first, including proving any replacement land is equal in value and usefulness. The change may improve local flood control but reduces park space.
