Brookhaven can replace parkland with stormwater basin

Effective immediately, the law lets Brookhaven's town board approve converting two park parcels into a stormwater runoff and recharge basin. The parcels cover 0.44 and 0.58 acres, totaling about 1.02 acres. The town must dedicate at least their fair market value to buying new parkland or improving existing parks and recreation facilities. If federal funds supported the parcels' purchase, maintenance, or improvement, the town must meet federal requirements before converting them. This includes showing the Secretary of the Interior that replacement land has equal fair market value and usefulness.
