Safer police response for autism and disabilities

The state must create, update, and share written police policies for emergencies involving people with autism and other developmental disabilities. It does this in consultation with the Commissioner of the Office for People With Developmental Disabilities. Police agencies must train both new and veteran officers on these policies. Training covers safe use of force and ways to calm and deescalate encounters, with the person’s safety first. It must address responses for both adults and minors. The law takes effect immediately.
