You are a paid, uniformed sanitation worker in a city that hires from a competitive civil service list. If a pre-employment physical did not show leptospirosis, and the disease later causes your total or partial disability or death, the law presumes it happened in the line of duty. This makes it easier for you or your survivors to get service-connected disability or death benefits. The presumption can be overcome with competent evidence and does not apply to workers' compensation or labor law claims. The law takes effect immediately.
