Stronger disability claim support for sanitation workers

The law presumes leptospirosis causing total or partial disability or death is work-related for qualifying sanitation workers in certain cities. Workers must be paid uniformed members of a paid sanitation department and selected from competitive civil service lists. They must have passed an entry physical exam that showed no evidence of leptospirosis. The presumption stands unless competent evidence proves otherwise. It can support duty-related benefit claims, but does not apply to workers’ compensation or labor law. The law took effect immediately and overrides conflicting laws and administrative codes within its scope.
