Cities and towns get sales tax share

When the county imposes the extra 1% tax, money is shared with local governments. A city that also imposes the city tax gets one-half of the net extra 1% collected inside the city, paid quarterly. A city that does not impose that tax gets a share based on its population. After the county’s net take from the extra 1% reaches $18,500,000 for a covered period (including 2023–2025 and 2025–2027), the next $1,500,000 goes to towns, split per person. Town payments are made by the county board after town and village resolutions.

Oneida County can add sales tax

The law lets Oneida County add local sales and use tax on top of the 3% county rate. It authorizes an extra 1.00% from September 1, 1992 through November 30, 2027. It also authorizes an extra 0.75% or 0.50% from December 1, 2008 through November 30, 2027, in addition to the 1.00%. The county must pass a local law or ordinance before any extra rate applies. To estimate your cost, multiply your yearly taxable purchases in Oneida County by the added rate.
