Empowers the council on the arts to designate the Harlem Renaissance Cultural District

More support options for Harlem cultural institutions

Effective immediately upon enactment, the law designates the Harlem Renaissance Cultural District and East Harlem as regions of cultural significance. The Harlem Renaissance Cultural District runs from 110th Street to 155th Street, between the Hudson River and Fifth Avenue. New York’s Council on the Arts may give cultural institutions there grants, technical help, or other support allowed by law. The law sets no grant amounts and guarantees no assistance. East Harlem, also called El Barrio, runs from East 96th Street to East 125th Street, between Fifth Avenue and the East River. The council may designate more regions, but each must be compact, connected, and united by an identifiable cultural heritage.
