Bill Overview

Analyzed Economic Effects

3 provisions identified: 1 benefits, 0 costs, 2 mixed.

New Bohemia firefighters’ benevolent association

The law creates the Bohemia Volunteer Firefighter’s Benevolent Association as a membership corporation. People can join by writing to the fire department secretary before the organization meeting, by attending that meeting, or as the by-laws allow. Control of funds now rests with an eight-member board: president, vice-president, secretary, treasurer, and four trustees. Officers and trustees are elected each year at the annual meeting.

Fire insurance taxes fund Bohemia firefighters

Beginning January 1, 2026, the Bohemia firefighters’ association collects the state tax on fire insurance premiums for property in its protection area (Town of Islip, Suffolk County, and any area it covers). It also receives its share of a second fire insurance tax based on business written there. The association’s designated officer has the same powers as a fire department treasurer to collect these taxes. The money can be used only for the association’s purposes.

Who can join the Bohemia association

Members are current, former, or future active volunteer members of the Bohemia department or any fire corporation in the district. People who have or earn exempt volunteer firefighter status under state law also qualify. You cannot join if you were removed for cause, expelled, or dropped and not reinstated. Membership ends if you leave active service before five years. Non-exempt members also lose membership if they move out of the district or to an area without fire protection.
