More New York veterans get tuition help

New York expands tuition awards to otherwise eligible veterans with at least four years of active duty. Another qualifying path covers service in hostilities after February 28, 1961, shown by an Armed Forces, Navy, or Marine Corps Expeditionary Medal. The program covers Vietnam, Persian Gulf, Afghanistan, and other eligible veterans who are New York residents. Veterans must enroll in an approved undergraduate, graduate, or vocational training program and apply for a Tuition Assistance Program award. Awards cover up to eight full-time semesters or the equivalent. Montgomery GI Bill benefits and Pell Grants do not reduce the award. These eligibility changes follow the timing of the referenced 2024 expansion law. The act also contains immediate-effect language and a separate July 1, 2025 effective-date clause.

Lower tuition award cap for graduate veterans

Veterans' tuition awards use the lower of actual tuition or State University of New York undergraduate tuition for state residents. This replaces the graduate-tuition benchmark for graduate students and can lower their awards. The calculation applies each full-time semester or equivalent study period, with awards reduced proportionally for part-time study. This change follows the timing of the referenced 2024 expansion law.
