Bill Overview

Analyzed Economic Effects

3 provisions identified: 2 benefits, 0 costs, 1 mixed.

Commission must advise DOT on airport plans

The commission helps plan and advise on running Republic Airport. It identifies capital needs, funding options, local economic development, and non‑aviation uses and in‑lieu‑of‑tax payments. The Department of Transportation must consult the commission before taking actions under section 400 of the transportation law.

How Republic Airport commission meets and is staffed

The commission meets at least six times a year when called by the DOT Commissioner or the chair. It keeps records of all meetings and recommendations. DOT staff provide support. The Commissioner names an executive secretary from DOT to handle the commission’s daily administration.

Republic Airport commission members and pay rules

The law sets a nine-member Republic Airport commission of Nassau or Suffolk residents. The Governor appoints one member directly, plus four from a Senate leader’s list and four from the Assembly Speaker’s list; each list must have at least three names. Members serve four-year terms, and a vacancy appointee serves the rest of the term. Members pick a chair. The DOT Commissioner, or a designee, also sits as an ex officio member. Members get no salary, but they are repaid for necessary expenses.
