Easier responder mental-health claims, with limits

Police officers and firefighters covered by section 30, EMTs, paramedics, other certified emergency medical staff, and emergency dispatchers get stronger workers’ comp protections for mental injuries. The Board cannot deny a claim from a work emergency just because the stress was not above normal job stress. For PTSD, acute stress disorder, or major depression, medical evidence that follows the DSM on the accident date (or a Board rule no stricter than the current or prior DSM) is accepted. You must show the condition came from extraordinary, work-related stress tied to a distinct event while doing your job. These special rules do not apply when the mental injury is caused by a work-related physical injury.

Responder rules start 180 days later

The law is now in effect. But the new responder mental‑injury rules start when the 2024 workers’ comp chapter starts. That chapter takes effect on the 180th day after it became law. Section one of this act follows that same start date.
