Southold officers get 20-year pension credit

The law lets six named Southold police officers join the optional 20-year police retirement plan with full past service credit. The officers are Frank Lyburd III; Brian McNamara; Peter J. Jacobs; Roman S. Wilinski; Alex U. Chenche; and Tara T. Desposito. Credit covers service starting Oct 20, 2003; Nov 1, 2004; and Dec 15, 2014, as listed. The Town must first elect to participate in the plan. Within six months of the law’s effective date, the Town must file a resolution and certify the officers were not barred by their own negligence. Each officer must then file with the State Comptroller within one year to receive coverage.

Southold pays added pension costs

The Town of Southold must pay all costs to grant this service credit. The Town can spread these costs over five years. The fiscal note estimates about $110,000 more in annual contributions for the year ending March 31, 2026. It also estimates about $1.45 million in one-time past service cost, or about $324,000 per year if paid over five years.
