Budgets and audits must be online

Each municipality posts its latest annual financial report, the current budget, the most recent audit, and any fiscal or multiyear plan on its official website required by state law. They do not post records that are legally exempt. These posting rules start the same day as the 2024 municipal-website law.

Local governments must run .gov websites

Municipalities with 1,500 or more people, based on the latest U.S. census, must keep an official .gov website that is public and kept current. The site must list hours, elected officials, and services, and post a plain-language privacy policy that explains any personal data collected and how it is used. It must also publish election, hearing, and meeting notices; agendas and minutes; town codes and local laws; and other required documents. Smaller places must follow these rules as practical, and using another locality’s .gov address counts. The law takes effect now, but these website rules start the same day as the 2024 municipal-website law.
