Expert panel to improve AANHPI lessons

The Education Department creates a four-member AANHPI history advisory committee. The Governor, Senate leader, Assembly Speaker, and Commissioner each appoint one expert, and all members are named within 90 days. The committee meets at least four times a year. It recommends K–12 curriculum and teaching resources and ways to strengthen programs, using the statewide survey. It can request data and help from state agencies. Members are unpaid but can be reimbursed for necessary expenses. The committee must deliver recommendations within two years, then it disbands.

Statewide survey of AANHPI history teaching

The State Education Commissioner runs a statewide survey on how public schools teach Asian American, Native Hawaiian, and Pacific Islander history. The survey asks about grade levels, class time, curriculum and publishers, alignment to learning standards, teacher training, tests, and barriers. The Commissioner sends a report with findings and any recommendations to the Governor and legislative leaders by January 1 after the law takes effect or within 120 days, whichever is later.

Three-year AANHPI education initiative

The law takes effect right away. It ends three years after the effective date. The survey and advisory committee authority lasts only during this period.
