Stacie Stueber gets retroactive disability benefits

Stacie Stueber receives an accidental disability retirement benefit equal to 75% of her late husband Richard Stueber’s final average salary. Payments reach back to March 1, 2019, when he retired as a Suffolk County deputy sheriff. He served in World Trade Center rescue, recovery, or cleanup work with New York City police and died from related mental illness. On March 12, 2020, the state retirement system found that this work had permanently prevented him from performing his duties. The law takes effect immediately and applies specifically to Stacie Stueber.

Suffolk County pays Stueber benefit costs

Suffolk County must pay all costs of putting the Stueber benefit into effect. The law takes effect immediately but does not set a total cost or require direct payments from individual residents. The fiscal note estimates a one-time past-service cost of about $1.04 million, assuming payment around March 1, 2026.
