Officers must protect kids during arrests

When an officer arrests someone responsible for a child under 18, the officer must, to the extent practicable, take steps at the scene to keep the child safe and secure. The officer follows the child‑sensitive arrest policies set under state law. This duty applies during the arrest.

Statewide arrest rules to protect kids

The state develops and shares written, child‑sensitive arrest rules for police. The rules require officers to identify and record if the arrested person cares for a child under 18. They set steps to arrange safe, temporary care for the child and may allow extra phone calls to find a caregiver. They tell officers how to lessen emotional harm to children who see an arrest. They include information on local crisis, child‑protection, and support services.
