Yonkers sells small park, adds bigger

The law lets Yonkers stop using 10,535 square feet of parkland and sell it to St. John’s Riverside Hospital at fair market value. The goal is to restore the Color Gardens for residents and visitors. Before any sale, the city must dedicate 19,840 square feet (about 0.455 acres) as new parkland. If the new parcel is worth less, Yonkers must spend the difference to buy more parkland or improve parks. If federal money was used on the old park, the city must meet federal rules and provide land of equal value and usefulness. The sale is allowed only if the parcel has not been used as public open space since a 1960 state law.
