Insurance tax money funds firefighter aid

Beginning January 1, 2026, the association collects the fire‑insurance premium taxes on policies covering property in the Town of Lockport Fire Protection District or areas the South Lockport Fire Company protects by contract. It also receives a share of related insurance tax based on business written in the same territory. The officer named in the by‑laws has the same powers as a fire department treasurer to collect and handle these taxes. The tax money can be used only for the association’s stated purposes, like aid to members and families, a headquarters, health and safety, morale, and promoting the volunteer fire service.

Membership rules for the firefighters' association

You can join if you are now, were, or later become a volunteer member of the South Lockport Fire Company. You can also join if you live in a contract‑protected area and are an exempt volunteer firefighter under state law. People expelled or removed for cause from any fire company or department cannot join. If you are not an exempt firefighter and move out of the protected area, or your area loses contract protection, your membership ends.

New help group for South Lockport firefighters

This law creates the South Lockport Volunteer Exempt Firefighters' Benevolent Association as a not‑for‑profit group. It helps indigent, disabled, or injured volunteer members and their families. It can support a headquarters, health and safety, morale, and promote the volunteer fire service. It has the usual powers of a state nonprofit. It must get written state approval before it opens or runs any home or institution that needs such approval.
