Faster child protective referrals, fewer anonymous tips

The state child-abuse hotline runs 24/7 under one number. Mandated reporters have an express and fax line. The register uses bias-reducing intake rules and, when a call could be abuse, it immediately sends it to local child protective services with the caller’s name, contact, and any prior related reports. It flags urgent cases like sexual abuse, a child’s death, or repeat harm within six months. The register does not forward a report if the caller stays anonymous, unless it reasonably believes the caller is under 18. If a caller refuses to share a name, a supervisor explains confidentiality, offers help or referrals, and warns that knowingly false reports are a crime.

Effective dates tied to 2025 reform

This law takes effect now. Sections one and two take effect on the same date as the 2025 Social Services Law reform (S.550-A/A.66-A). Under that reform, most changes start right away, but its sections one and two start on the 180th day after it became law.
