Faster family and disability leave for union construction workers

Beginning January 1, 2027, union construction workers can qualify for paid family leave across employers. You are eligible with the employer right before leave if you worked its normal week for at least 26 of the last 39 weeks with covered union employers. You stay eligible for family leave only while employed by a covered employer. Disability benefits continue while you work and for four weeks after your job ends; if you work for another covered employer in that time, disability coverage starts there right away. If you already met the 4-week (disability) or 26-week (family leave) rule and return from an agreed unpaid leave, vacation, or a layoff after collecting unemployment, you become eligible right away when you return to covered work. Part-time employees who work less than the normal week for one employer qualify for disability on day 25 and for paid family leave on day 175 of that regular schedule.

Union health coverage kept during family leave

Beginning January 1, 2027, employers must keep your union health plan or fund benefits while you are on family leave. Coverage stays in force as if you kept working. Union contracts can add terms, like paying health contributions or counting leave as hours worked, if they do not conflict with this rule.

New rules start January 1, 2027

This law takes effect January 1, 2027. All new paid family and disability leave rules for construction workers start on that date.
